Chapter Six

“Are you hungry?” Rusty asked.

She arched an eyebrow at him. “Not after our ‘rest stop’.”

He grinned, a big shit-eating grin. “I meant for food.”

She licked her lips and vivid images of her mouth taking him played through his mind. Good Lord, would he ever be able to look at her lick her lips and not think about what had happened a few miles south of Dallas?

“Yeah, I could eat,” she said. “What town are we close to?”

“Waco. I know it’s a chain, but there’s a Ninfa’s in the restored downtown.”

She wrinkled her nose. “Not Tex-Mex, not after the real thing yesterday.”

“Okay, there’s a seafood place overlooking the Brazos River. I don’t remember the name, but the food’s always good and the view is spectacular.”

“That sounds better. How long until Waco?”

“Another thirty minutes or so.”

“Okay.”

She lightly traced his thigh with her fingertips. Uh, oh, he hoped she wasn’t starting something again. He was hot for her, but it would take a little while to recuperate. But her touch was light, affectionate.

“Hmmm, feels nice.”

“What about you? What about your life?” she asked.

“What do you mean?”

“You know. I told you my parents’ life story last night and then we talked about my time on the rodeo circuit. The rest of my life, after I turned ten and you partnered with Papá, you know. But I don’t know much about you.”

He cleared his throat. Was she getting serious about him, wanting to know more? But it wasn’t fair. She was right—he’d wanted to know more about her family. Just curiosity, like him, he guessed.

“Well, I’ve lived a fairly normal life. No great love stories in my background.”

“Not even when you met Tiffany?”

Oh, hell, he didn’t want to go there. But she did have a right to know. “I fell for Tiffany’s image. The gorgeous model, the good-time girl. You know. Guy stuff. Not a foundation for a proper marriage.”

“Why did you divorce? Did you or she cheat—?”

“No, no, nothing like that.” He grabbed her hand and squeezed it. “At least, not on my side. And I never had reason to doubt her.”

“But you were away on business a lot.”

“Yeah, but it wasn’t that. I didn’t worry about her.” He cleared his throat and released her hand. “Tiffany never seemed to enjoy the physical side of marriage much and—”

“You’ve got to be kidding.”

“Nope, unfortunately, I’m not. After the honeymoon was over, we realized we had practically nothing in common. She liked to shop and gossip with friends. Go to movies, which was okay. But no sports or horseback riding or…or…anything I liked to do. And she wasn’t keen on starting a family, either. We kind of just drifted apart.”

“Oh, did you want a family?”

“Maybe, I’m not certain.” He glanced at her from the corner of his eye. “If I could have been sure my family would have been like yours—full of love.”

“What about your family? I know you have two brothers. Right?”

“Yeah, I was the middle child. Grew up in Odessa. My mother ran off with a trucker about the time I turned ten years old.
